From Benchtop to Clinical Trial: Examples of technology development: Presenters will describe a technology that has gone from benchtop development and pre-clinical evaluation to being studied in a recent clinical trial, in order to provide the audience with perspective on the development process through specific examples with supporting data. Presenters from industry, academia/healthcare settings and regulatory agencies are all encouraged to submit. Talks will be of extended duration and may be presented by a single speaker or two speakers (a scientist/engineer and a clinician to separately present the pre-clinical and clinical outcomes). Selection preference will be given to abstracts that best illustrate the medical device development pipeline through a specific detailed example.

Panel Discussion: Preventing Implant-Associated Infection

About

The consequences of implant-associated infection are significant and often results in the “failure” of the surgical procedure. Various approaches are being proposed and studied to reduce the rate of infection including coating implants with antimicrobial materials or antibiotics; covalently attaching antimicrobial molecules onto the implant surface; and utilizing controlled release nanoparticles. The purpose of this panel discussion is to provide the background, the new approaches, and the challenges for reducing implant-associated infections. Leaders of the field, including several past SFB Presidents, will present the different perspectives of clinicians, basic scientists & engineers, and industry.

Put your skills to the test in this unique session designed to challenge you to consider the commercialization aspects of your research. Individuals and groups (your choice) will be judged by experts from investing, industry, regulatory, and academia on the strength of their commercialization plans. Prizes will be awarded to the top teams, including audience’s choice. To participate, submit an abstract that contains your Executive Summary, including information on your technology, the market, and the commercialization strategy. Those selected will give a 10 minute pitch followed by Q&A “Shark Tank” style from judges and audience.

The theme of this session would be catering the translational needs of modern vaccines using multi-disciplinary approaches involving unique biomaterials, formulations or delivery systems. The topics includes polymer technology, biologically active materials, nanotechnology, microneedles, and/or adjuvant-technologies for the application of vaccines.
